One of the classiest things (and not to mention budget-friendly) is cultivating great relationships with people. It doesn’t cost you a thing and yet it can bring you so much!
I have a colleague that I met a couple years ago. I had hired her as the hair/make-up artist for a project I was doing and loved her from the get-go.
Through the years, anytime that I had a project in which I needed assistance, she was always the first person on my list. She’s super sweet, extremely reliable (something that is sadly rare in today’s age) and not to mention obscenely talented!
How talented might you ask? Check it out!
Utter fabulousity! Right!!! My boring brown hair was completely functional (it covered my grays) but seriously lacked in the form part of it. I mean, come on! I work in a creative field! Shouldn’t I have creative hair to match???
She touched-up my roots and then used the bayalage technique to handpaint in luscious caramel highlights.
Then she got to work chop-chopping away at my snooze-fest of a bob. First up was some serious texturizing all around. I wanted to keep a bunch of my length, but desperately needed a new lease on hair. She finished the cut by adding some great bangs. I don’t know why I always poo-poo bangs. I look pretty darn good in them!
Now, here’s where great relationships come in handy! We negotiated…she did my hair and I cooked her a super yummy, healthy dinner and gave her two large bags of produce fresh from my backyard in exchange for a discount on my services. If you have great relationships with people, then this sort of thing is possible. But if you have a bad reputation in business…then forget about it! Your reputation and business relationships are EVERYTHING in life. And it doesn’t cost you anything to maintain positive ones.
Always strive to do the right things, treat people the right way. It most definitely pays off. In this instance, I got not just good hair days, but GREAT hair days!
And my super cool shades…Dollar Store BABY!!!

Soooooo…I know that this post is a day late, but I have a REALLY good reason!!! I promise!!!
Yesterday, instead of doing my normal job (being a make-up artist), I had to be a model as well! YIKES!
My neighbor and good friend had a project due for her photography class and wanted to know if I would help her out. And since my last portrait for work was taken almost 6 years ago, I figured it was time for an update. But I didn’t want just any ole portrait. No boring bank investor photo for me. I decided to make a play on famous portraits. We did three different looks-all of which will have their day on the blog, but for today I’m sharing the one that I have COMPLETELY fallen in love with and have made my profile picture on ALL of my work social media. And as soon as I order new business cards, it will be on those as well. I HATE photos of myself, but I LOVE this one!
So, what do you think??? We channeled an iconic portrait of Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s. It goes along with Classy on a Budget. And if you look real close, you’ll see that I am most definitely NOT promoting smoking as I’m holding a make-up brush. 🙂
So, My Favorite Thing right now? Very talented friends. Thanks SO much to the uber-fabulous Natalie A. Stevens for her phenomenal job on my portrait! I hope you get an A! You can see more of Natalie’s work HERE
Ok, so I seriously think that I need to have my head checked out. Me, the girl who lives in black, who doesn’t particularly care for things that are all girly has fallen in love recently with pink make-up!
Not pink like that!!! Although I have to admit, it is a rather cool pic.
I’m talking more along the lines of the Spring 2012 collection for Chanel.
Soft pink cheeks that blend so beautifully into the skin that you can’t tell if it’s make-up or if she really is blushing. Eye shadow that you can’t really see the pink, but for some reason, the blue in her eyes is positively beyond amazing. And lips flushed in such a gorgeous color that it looks like she just had an 8 hour make-out session.
Perhaps it’s that my eyes change color and I rather like the shade they turn when my eye shadow has a tinge of pink to it. Perhaps it’s that I went back to my dark brown hair and the pink tones look rather cool with it. Or perhaps I’ve been spending way too much time with my little fashionista daughter who wears as much pink as I do black! Haha!
Either way, pink make-up is my current go-to face and I’m actually going to admit that I kinda like it!

I am such a happy camper right now and here’s why…
Oh yes!!! That’s right! That’s my new iPhone case! Gorgeous, isn’t it! Jealous, aren’t you!
It’s a custom/hand-made/one-of-a-kind piece designed just for me by the uber-fabulous Erin Fader of Erin Fader Jewelry Design (www.erinfader.com). She makes the most stunning jewelry that TOTALLY fits in with my mantra of “being classy on a budget”.
I first met Erin over a year ago. She was an accessories designer participating in a RAW Artists Showcase here in San Diego (www.rawartists.org/sandiego) and I was her make-up artist. Immediately I fell in love with her pieces and once I got a chance to actually get to know her, she is the most sweetest person you will ever meet! She epitomizes class and bring warmth and joy to everyone around her so much that you can actually feel her love ooze from her pieces. That feeling makes me love my new iPhone case that much more (as if that could be possible!). 🙂
Now we are both a part of FGI San Diego (Fashion Group International) (http://sandiego.fgi.org/), she is going to meet some amazing contacts and most definitely have her line picked up in all the swanky stores. I’ll have to buy up the stuff I want now before I can no longer afford her! 😉
You can check out and purchase her line on her website (www.erinfader.com) as well as send her a message regarding commissioning one-of-a-kind pieces (she’s doing my iPad case next to match my iPhone! Can’t wait!).
Here’s another picture of my new baby sitting in her phone stand on my desk…
And a picture of uber-excited me when Erin delivered it last night…
Thanks Erin! YOU ROCK!!!!
